AI sales agents: what they do and which to pick

AI sales agents answer buyers, qualify leads and move people toward a purchase without waiting for a rep. This guide explains the three kinds, what separates a good one from a demo, how to measure whether it pays off, and which tools are worth a look for selling on your website.

What is an AI sales agent?

An AI sales agent is software that does part of a salesperson’s job on its own. It reads what a buyer says, looks up the answer in your business information, and decides the next step: answer a question, recommend a product, ask a qualifying question, share a discount code, book a call or bring in a human.

The difference from the chatbots of a few years ago is that nobody has to script every path. Older bots followed decision trees (“click 1 for pricing”) and broke as soon as a visitor typed something unexpected. Modern AI sales agents run on large language models, so they handle free-form questions like “Does the Pro plan work for a team of six, and can I pay yearly?” in one go.

The catch is that a language model on its own will happily make things up. A real AI sales agent is the model plus your knowledge (pages, products, prices, policies), plus rules about what it may and may not say, plus a way to hand off to people. That last part is what separates a useful agent from a liability.

The three types of AI sales agents

“AI sales agent” covers very different products. Knowing which type you need saves a lot of wasted demos.

TypeWhat it doesBest when
Website / chat (inbound)Answers visitors on your site in real time, qualifies them, recommends products, shares links and codes, hands hot leads to your teamYou already get traffic and lose buyers who have questions
Outbound SDR agentResearches prospects, writes and sends cold email or LinkedIn sequences, follows up, books meetingsYou sell B2B and need more top-of-funnel pipeline
Voice agentAnswers or places phone calls, qualifies callers, books appointmentsYour buyers call (clinics, home services, real estate)

Most small and mid-sized businesses get the fastest return from the inbound type, because the buyers are already on the site. Someone reading your pricing page at 11 PM with a question is far closer to buying than a cold prospect. An inbound agent catches that moment; outbound and voice agents create new moments, which is slower and needs more setup (sending domains, lead lists, phone numbers, compliance).

The rest of this guide focuses on website AI sales agents. If you are specifically after chat that sells, see our deeper guide to AI sales chatbots.

How a website AI sales agent works

  1. It learns your business. It reads your website, product catalog, pricing and policies into a searchable knowledge base. Good tools do this by crawling your site; see how a chatbot knowledge base works.
  2. It reads the visitor. Which page they are on, what they viewed before, whether they came back, and what they type. Buying language (“how much for 5 seats?”) means something different from research questions (“what is live chat?”).
  3. It answers from your facts. It retrieves the relevant pages or products and writes a reply in your tone. A guardrail should check the reply against your knowledge before it is sent.
  4. It moves the sale forward. A product link, a coupon, a plan recommendation, a booking link, or a question that qualifies the lead.
  5. It hands off. When the visitor asks for a person, or the deal needs one, it alerts your team and passes the full conversation so nobody starts over.

What to look for in an AI sales tool

Every vendor demo looks good. These are the questions that separate tools in real use:

  • Where does it get its answers? If you must write every Q&A by hand, it will be out of date in a month. Look for automatic learning from your site and store.
  • What happens when it does not know? Ask the vendor directly. The right answer is “it says so and offers a person”, not “it tries its best”.
  • Does it sell, or only support? Many AI agents are built to deflect support tickets. A sales agent should recommend products, mention current offers and give a clear next step.
  • Does it know who is ready to buy? Intent signals (pricing views, plan clicks, return visits, buying language) let the agent push when it should and stay helpful when it should not.
  • How is AI billed? Per resolution or per interaction pricing gets expensive exactly when the agent is doing well. Check what 1,000 AI conversations a month would cost you.
  • Can you control the voice and rules? You should be able to say “never promise delivery dates” or “always mention the 30-day guarantee” and have it stick.
  • How clean is the handoff? Your team should see the whole conversation and get alerted, on mobile too.

How Sukar works as an AI sales agent

Sukar puts an AI sales assistant on your website that learns your pages automatically and connects to Shopify, WooCommerce or YouCan, so it can find products, share discount codes and send checkout links in the chat. You set your business type, goal and voice in the AI Playbook, and add running offers that the AI mentions at the right moment.

On Pro, visitor intent scoring rates each visitor from 0 to 100 based on what they do. The AI adapts: educational for early researchers, qualifying for warm leads, and a closer mode with a clear call to action for hot buyers. Your team gets an alert when a hot lead appears.

What Sukar does not do: it does not send cold email, make phone calls, send SMS or take payments. It is an inbound agent that sends people to your checkout, booking page or team. If you need support coverage too, the same agent handles it; see AI customer service agent.

PlanSukar
Free$0 — 50 AI conversations a month, 1 website, 1 agent seat
Starter$29/mo — 300 AI conversations a month, 3 agent seats
Pro$79/mo — 3,000 AI conversations, 10 agent seats, visitor scoring, closer mode, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram

AI is included in the plan price. No per-resolution fees.

How to measure whether an AI sales agent pays off

Decide on the numbers before you switch it on, and compare against the month before.

  • Chat-to-sale conversion. Of visitors who chatted, how many bought or booked? Compare with visitors who did not chat.
  • Revenue from chat-assisted orders. Track orders where the visitor clicked a link or used a code the agent shared.
  • Leads captured after hours. Conversations and emails collected when nobody was online. This is usually the biggest early win.
  • First response time. Seconds instead of hours. Fast answers on pricing pages matter most.
  • Handoff rate and quality. How often the agent needs a person, and whether those leads are actually good.
  • Cost per conversation. Plan price divided by AI conversations, compared with what a human chat costs you.

A simple test: run the agent on your highest-intent pages (pricing, product, checkout) for 30 days and read a sample of transcripts every week. Transcripts tell you faster than dashboards whether it is selling or just chatting. For more on turning that traffic into revenue, see how to convert website visitors. Common mistakes

  • Being pushy from the first message. Visitors close chats that read like ads. A good agent answers first and sells when there is a reason to.
  • Feeding it stale information. Old prices and expired offers cost trust. Re-sync after catalog or pricing changes.
  • No path to a human. Some buyers want a person before a big purchase. Make that easy.
  • Never reading transcripts. The agent’s weak spots show up in real conversations long before they show up in numbers.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI sales agent?+

Software that handles part of the sales process on its own using a large language model: answering buyer questions, qualifying leads, recommending products, booking meetings or writing outreach. Unlike a scripted chatbot, it understands free-form questions and decides what to say next based on your business information.

Can an AI sales agent replace a salesperson?+

For simple, high-volume questions (pricing, features, which plan or product fits) it can close the loop without a person. For complex deals, negotiations and relationships it works best as the first line: it answers instantly, qualifies, and hands warm buyers to a human with the full conversation.

What is the difference between an AI sales agent and an AI sales assistant?+

The terms overlap. “Agent” usually means it acts on its own with customers (replies to visitors, sends outreach). “Assistant” often means it helps your reps (drafts emails, summarises calls). Sukar is an agent on your website that also alerts your team when a hot lead shows up.

How much do AI sales agents cost?+

Pricing models vary: per seat, per resolution or interaction, per credit, or included in a plan. Sukar includes AI in every plan: Free has 50 AI conversations a month, Starter is $29/mo with 300, and Pro is $79/mo with 3,000, with no per-resolution fees.

Does Sukar send cold emails or make calls?+

No. Sukar is an inbound AI sales agent: it works on your website chat (and WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram on Pro). It does not send outbound email sequences, make phone calls, send SMS or take payments. It guides buyers to your checkout, booking page or team.

How long does it take to set up?+

With Sukar, a few minutes: add your website so the AI can learn your pages, pick a playbook (business type, goal, tone), and paste one script tag. Outbound SDR agents usually take longer because they need lead lists, domains and sequence setup.
